Reward yourself after exercise. Or during. Either way, we've put together our favourite cycle routes that visit plenty of cafes and pubs. You know what they say - the journey is the destination.

Below each route you'll find a downloadable map, so you can tailor the start to your needs and then just follow your nose.

Prague - Okoř - Libčice - Máslovice - Klečany - Troja

A fifty-kilometre circuit around Prague, and let us tell you, it is worth it. Head out of the capital to the ruins of Okoř, where you can replenish your energy with espresso and ice cream in the traditional Pod Hradem pastry shop. Or save your caffeine fix for your next stop in Libčice, where you'll find 9 bars café. So that you don't have to pedal all the way to Kralupy nad Vltavou, we recommend bringing pocket change for the ferry from Libčice to Máslovice. In Máslovice, you can visit the Little Museum of Butter or take home a glass of local buttermilk in your jersey. Continue over the hill to Klečany, and grab a quick espresso or lemonade at Kavárna Klícka. Or pass by Bistro Karel for focaccia with olives and a homemade lemonade in their blossoming garden, and the hill to Klečany will be a distant memory.

  • Length: 50-55 km
  • Altitude: 670 m

U Kalendů – Mokropec – Kliment Cidre – U Věže – Karlštejn – Praha

An eighty-kilometre route which starts, and maybe even ends, at U Kalendů. Start the morning with pastries and coffee in their bakery and finish the ride with a smoothie in their sunny garden. But back to the start. After breakfast, continue about 20 km to the Mokropec café in Mokropsy, where we recommend their savoury tart or French canelé. If you're not in a hurry, you can intersperse the route with a stop in Kliment Cidery, taste the local organic apple products and enjoy the view of the orchard. Or stop by U Věže, under the bell that announces the time of day to Dobřichovice, a popular destination for cyclists and hikers from all over Prague and the surrounding area. Have their meatloaf in a bun and continue back to Prague via Karlštejn, Svatý Jan pod Skalou and Rudná.

Prague - Patka Nera - Kro

From Tuesday to Saturday you can ride two wheels to the bakery and bistro Patka Nera in Neratovice. From Prague, take the route around the water to Klečany and Odolená Voda, back via Kostelec nad Labem and then reward yourself with dinner at Kro in Prague's Libeň.

Prague - Nižbor - Broumy - Prague

How about a Saturday 100? Go from Prague to Nižbor, where you can have lunch at Zastávka Nižbor, a place reminiscent of an old inn. If you get hungry after 30 km, the pizza at Ristorante Locale in Vysoký Újezd will take care of it. And since regular hydration is a must when you're doing a hundred kilometres, stop in Broumy at Hospůdka na hřišti for a beer from Matuška brewery.

If you don't feel like cycling back from Broumy, you can take the train from Beroun and enjoy the scenery from the window of the express train.

Prague - Veltrus Castle - Mělník - Děčín

Those who have it in their legs can follow the Vltava to Mělník, and from Mělník follow the Elbe to Děčín. The route is 150 km long, but is relatively flat the entire way. If you stop for ice cream at Kafe z Ruky at Veltrusy Castle, a hamburger at Mělník's Brloh or at Němý Medvěd in the picturesque Míru Square, grab a cardamom twist at Clay in Litoměřice, and a final reward in Děčín at OKR espresso bar, you'll remember the route fondly on the train ride back.

Prague - Poděbrady

You can also head east from Prague, along the Vysočany cycle path. Continue through the green countryside of Kyje and Dolní Počernice until you reach Čelákovice via Zeleneč, where you connect to the Elbe. Go upstream to Nymburk, and after a small stop at the bakery and café Stanice Nymburk follow the river to Poděbrady. There we recommend making a reservation at Náš Hostinec. The path to the inn leads through the spa park and at the end you will find Czech cuisine on tap.

Prague - Únětice - Prague

A quick ride after work? It's an hour and a half to Únětice and back, even with a beer at Únětice Brewery. If you're heading out at the end of the week, you can get a draught beer and a piece of sweet or savoury cake at U Lasíků.

Prague - Khuulna Kava - Křivoklát - Prague

There are countless cycling routes to the west of Prague, but when planning your ride, the Křivoklát circuits can help you. It's a network of eight routes of varying length and difficulty, the longest of which leads to Křivoklát. From Prague to the castle and back via Nižbor, you can record a beautiful hundred in the saddle. On the way to Křivoklát, stop at Khulna kaava to replenish your fluids and energy for the hills that lie ahead. There won't be many of them!

On your way back to Prague, you can stop in Chýně for a classic dessert and coffee at the bistro KavaJinak.

Prague - Zbraslav - Černošice - Prague

Sometimes even an experienced cyclist doesn't have a taste for hills, but a big appetite for pizza! In this case, set off on the right bank of the Vltava towards Zbraslav. From there, via Lipence and Dolní Černošice, you reach the Berounka river and you are a short walk to the inconspicuous Pizza Metro. Here you can only get local Neapolitan pizza in a box, which we recommend eating on a bench by the river overlooking the dam. But beware, they're only open from Friday to Tuesday.

You can return to Prague via Radotín, with a stop for an espresso at Velo Restaurant and then take it around the left bank of the Vltava for a change.

  • Length: 35-40 km
  • 35 m elevation gain.

Prague - Kolo&Kava

The 50km ride west of Prague has a clear destination - the aptly named Kolo&Kava cycling café. This route with a pleasant elevation gain will lead you through the Prokop valley to the village of Červený Újezd. Have a coffee and cake in the café, but beware, you might also want to indulge your wallet. The business also operates as a bike shop and service, with a range of cycling equipment on display.
