Trautenberk Brewery, Malá Úpa
In Malá Úpa, right on the Krkonoše ridges, you will find the Trautenberk Brewery, one of the highest breweries in the country. It is located in the former Tippeltova bouda, later known as the Družba Hotel, and has been brewing beer here since 2015 using water from the slopes of Sněžka.
The brewery includes a stylish mountain restaurant which offers excellent food as well as beers such as the bottom-fermented light lager 11°, the semi-dark thirteen or the popular top-fermented APU. And if you don't feel like going home, you can stay the night, as the brewery includes cosy accommodation. You can also take home a reward - beer in unique PET litres in a gift pack with four thirds bottles.
Where to go in the area:
- Sněžka - along the Czech-Polish Friendship Route: From Malá Úpa you can follow a beautiful ridge trail through Soví sedlo (Owl's Saddle) to the highest mountain in the Czech Republic.
- Pomezní Boudy: Ideal for a shorter walk with views of Poland.
- Eliščino údolí: A walk through the valley will take you along the Malá Úpa stream to the regulating dam and the Church of St Peter and Paul. Along the way you will come across fairy tale characters and information boards that will delight children in particular.
Fries Brewery, Friesovy boudy
Between Strážný and Výrovka, in a secluded area surrounded by woods and meadows, lies Friesovy boudy where beer is brewed from mountain spring water. In addition to the 12° lager, you can also taste the semi-dark 13° or seasonal specials. A taproom overlooking the countryside, the honest cuisine and the quietness of the surroundings create an atmosphere that will make you want to come back.
Where to go in the area:
- Hike to Výrovka: A beautiful hike, you're up in an hour. You can continue to Luční bouda or back via Klínovky.
- Sunset at Friesovka: Just walk a few steps from the hut and enjoy the postcard-like panorama.
- Home cooking: It's not just about the beer - the lodge has its own kitchen, delicious goulash and blueberry dumplings.
Brewery Hendrych, Vrchlabí
Hendrych may be in the foothills, but for beer lovers it tends to be the first and last stop on trips to the mountains.. The family-run brewery in Vrchlabí has been priding itself on craftsmanship since 2012, yet it is not afraid to experiment - for example, together with Prague's Matuška, they put together a sour with potatoes, mushrooms and caraway seeds.
Otherwise, you'll find stable and reliable lagers that will stand up to a day's hike. The light Czech ten H10 and the bitter light lager H11 are their stalwarts, plus IPA or ALE in the summer.
Where to go in the area:
- Vrchlabí Chateau and Chateau Park: Nice stop for an afternoon stroll, just outside the centre.
- Krkonoše Museum: Ideal when it's raining - learn what life in the mountains is all about.
- The cycle path around the Elbe: An easy hike on flat ground, perfect for getting started after a tasting.
Krkonošský medvěd Brewery, Vrchlabí
Vrchlabí has a second brewery and this one is completely different from Hendrych. Since 1995, beer has been brewed in Hořejší Vrchlabí in Krkonošský medvěd microbrewery, which is part of the hotel Pivovarská bašta. The water for the brewhouse comes from historical borehole in the area called Peklo. The same borehole served the former municipal brewery in the 19th century. Thanks to its unique composition of ions, the beer here has distinctive character and unmistakable taste.
Classic Czech lagers are brewed here, but the local brewers are not afraid to experiment, so you can often find specials on offer, such as light semi-dark top-fermented beer. Summer sunset ale or a sixteen Hibiscus special - a top-fermented wheat beer containing hibiscus flower extract.
Where to go in the area:
- Vejsplachy Nature Trail: A peaceful circuit through the countryside, ideal for families or a beer tasting.
- A shooting range and cultural house: There is often a concert or theatre here, check out the programme.
- Beer souvenirs: Right in the brewery you can buy bottles with a bear label. A good gift and memory.
Pecky Brewery, Pec pod Sněžkou
The Pecky Brewery can be found in the middle of nature in Pec pod Sněžkou next to the wellness hotel Bouda Máma, where you can go straight you can check in. It's a nice place where you can relax after a hike to Sněžka or after a hike from Růžohorek. You sit on the terrace, order a beer goulash or specialties from the grill and a bottom-fermented twelve or dark thirteen.
The brewery relies on a modern approach, smaller batches and freshness. On tap, it rotates frequently, making each visit a small discovery. And you can also enjoy the beer spa.
Where to go in the area:
- Pecka Game Landscape: Adventure playground on the slope between Portášky and Velká Úpa. Wooden elements, cable cars and views that entertain even adults.
- The cable car to Hnědý vrch: Maximum views with minimum effort. A lookout tower at the top, you can walk down.
- The Úpa River: A walk along the river will calm you down - ideal before your next pint.
Krkonoše Beer tour
Brewery Paroháč, Luční bouda
The highest brewery in the Czech Republic can be found right on Luční bouda, 1410 m above sea level, where the beer really tastes different and the water flows directly from the source of the White Elbe. The brewery's brewhouse is located in a former wine bar, which is decorated with a historical fresco from 1940.
This highlights the beauty of the copper brewhouse. If interested, you can also arrange a tour of the brewery with tastings, an explanation of the brewing process and a light excursion into the history of brewing. At the same time, Luční bouda brews excellent beer and is famous for its big rolls and blueberry pies.
Where to go in the area:
- Hike from Špindlerův mlýn through Kozí hřbety: A more demanding route with amazing views.
- Meadow plain: In summer blooming, in winter a snow wasteland. In both cases beautiful.
- Accommodation directly at the lodge: If you don't feel like going back from Luční bouda, you can sleep there and go hiking in the morning.
Krakonoš Brewery, Trutnov
The Krakonoš brewery in Trutnov is one of the oldest in the region, beer has been brewed here since the mid-16th century. Although it is not a microbrewery, it definitely deserves a mention.
It is brewed in the classic way - bottom-fermented, unpasteurised beers with a clean character, without frills. The basis is water from its own deep well supplied by springs from the foothills of the Krkonoše Mountains. The range includes both light and dark lagers, and during the holidays, stronger specials such as Krakonoš 14° appear. The ideal beer for a thirst-quencher or a nice lunch.

- Old Town Trutnov: A pleasant walk among the historic houses, we recommend starting at Krakonoš Square.
- The forest trails in Kryblica: A short walk from the centre - forest, peace and quiet.
- Trutnov Trails: A network of well-marked singletrack in the hills above the town.
